The six-minute search check.

What do buyers see when they search you? Twenty yes-or-no checks, the same ones I run before a sales call. You get a score out of 20 and your top three fixes.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type here is sent or stored.

Step 1

Your details.

These fill in the search links below so each one opens the exact search a buyer would run. Nothing is sent anywhere.

The words a buyer would type, like "accountants" or "kitchen fitters".
Used for the speed test and the website checks.
Step 2

The checks.

Twenty questions in five groups. Open each link, look, then answer. If you are unsure, say so: it counts as a gap, which is usually what it is.

Your Google result

Do this on your phone if you can. It is what most buyers use.

  1. 1 When you search your business name and town, does a Google Business Profile panel show up for you?

How to check: Search your name and town. Look for the box with your map pin, reviews and phone number.

Search Google (opens in a new tab) ↗
  2. 2 Are the phone number, opening hours and website link in that panel all correct?

How to check: Same search. Check each detail against what you would tell a customer today.

Search Google (opens in a new tab) ↗
  3. 3 Is your own website the first normal result (below any ads) when you search your business name?

How to check: Search just your business name. Skip the ads and the map, and look at the first ordinary link.

Search Google (opens in a new tab) ↗
  4. 4 Do you appear anywhere on the first page, map or results, when you search for your service in your town?

How to check: Search your main service and town, the way a new buyer would.

Search Google (opens in a new tab) ↗

Search Google (opens in a new tab) ↗
  2. 6 Is your newest Google review less than three months old?

Search Google (opens in a new tab) ↗
  4. 8 Can buyers find reviews of you somewhere other than Google, such as Facebook, Trustpilot, Checkatrade or your industry directory?

How to check: Search your name with the word reviews and look past the Google panel.

Your website on a phone

Use your own phone, ideally off wi-fi.

  1. 9 Does your homepage load in about three seconds or less on mobile data?

How to check: Turn wi-fi off and open your site on your phone, or run it through PageSpeed Insights and read the mobile result.

Open PageSpeed Insights (opens in a new tab) ↗
  2. 10 Does the first screen say what you do and where, without scrolling?

How to check: Open your site on your phone and read only what shows before you scroll. Would a stranger know what you sell and which area you cover?

Open your site (opens in a new tab) ↗
  3. 11 Is there a phone number or booking button you can tap without scrolling?

How to check: Same first screen. Look for something you can tap to call or book.

Open your site (opens in a new tab) ↗
  4. 12 Does your contact form work, and does the message actually arrive?

How to check: Fill in your own form from your phone, then check the inbox it should land in, including spam.

Open your site (opens in a new tab) ↗
