AI Overviews ads: how does a small firm still get named for free?

Doodle of a small business owner comparing a paid card and unpaid source links in an AI search answer

TL;DR

AI Overviews ads are spreading, and Google is testing ads inside AI Mode too. In October 2026 it started showing AI Mode ads to people who connect their Gmail and Photos. For a small UK firm, very little of this reaches you yet: ads inside AI Overviews run in 12 countries and the UK isn't one of them. The free route still works. Google says you need nothing special to appear in AI Mode, and in my own research the firms that got named had more reviews, the right directory listings and a website that says what they do and where.

Why trust this page: I do SEO and AI search work for small UK businesses, and I sell it, so read with that in mind. I don't run Google Ads for anyone, so I've no reason to push you towards the paid route. Every Google fact below comes from Google's own pages, checked on 25 October 2026, and the research figures are from my own published study.

What changed with ads in Google AI Mode?

Two things. In May 2026 Google started testing new ad formats inside AI Mode, including ads that appear in a list of recommendations alongside the answers people didn't pay for. Then in October it began testing ads for people who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence, a group it had kept ad-free until then. Both are labelled Sponsored.

The May formats are called Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers. Google's announcement says Gemini writes an "independent AI explainer" next to the advertiser's own creative, saying why the product fits the question. So a paid placement now sits inside the answer, in the same voice as the answer.

The October change matters because of what it can use. Google's Search help page now says ads won't be based directly on someone's Gmail inbox or Photos library, but that summaries, excerpts and inferences from those apps may be used to show ads. Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google confirmed the test to Search Engine Land, reversing what it said in March.

Are AI Overviews ads and AI Mode ads showing in the UK yet?

Mostly not. Google's ads help page lists 12 countries where ads can appear inside AI Overviews, all in English, and the UK isn't on it. Ads above and below AI Overviews run in every market, including here. Connecting Gmail and Photos to Search isn't listed for the UK either, so the October test can't reach UK users yet.

Here's what Google's own pages say, as of 25 October 2026:

PlacementUK statusGoogle's source
Ads above or below an AI OverviewLive in all markets where AI Overviews runGoogle Ads Help
Ads inside an AI OverviewNot in the UK. English only, in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the USThe same page
New AI Mode formats (Highlighted Answers, Conversational Discovery)Being tested. Google hasn't published a UK dateGoogle's May 2026 post
Ads for people who connect Gmail and PhotosNot in the UK: connecting apps isn't offered here yetGoogle Search Help

That will change. Google rolls these things out country by country, so treat this table as a snapshot and check the help pages before you plan around it. For advertisers who do want in, Google's page says ads inside AI Overviews only come from broad match, AI Max, Performance Max, Shopping or Dynamic Search Ads, and finance is one of the sectors left out.

On 15 October Google said it is showing more links inside AI Mode and AI Overview answers, and placing them higher up. It is also testing a section at the top of some answers for the official page you need, with a line on why each link is useful. That's good news for small firms, because a link is a way out of the answer and onto your site.

The detail is in Google's 15 October post. What it doesn't include is any figure on clicks, so nobody outside Google knows yet whether sites are getting more visits from AI answers. Your own Search Console is the only honest measure, and even that doesn't split AI Mode clicks out cleanly.

What does it mean for a small firm that won’t pay?

It means the answer is no longer purely earned. Some of the businesses in an AI Mode list will have paid to be there, and the gap between being named and not being named gets more expensive to close with money. The firms that get named for free are the ones the answer already trusts, so that's where your effort pays back.

Most small B2B firms I talk to don't run Google Ads at all, and the ones that do rarely use broad match or Performance Max. So even when these formats reach the UK, the paid route won't be open to most of them without changing how they advertise. The free route is open to everyone today.

IN AN AI ANSWER

Two different ways to be seen

A paid placement and a source link do different jobs. Check the label before you judge the result.

PAID ROUTE Sponsored placement

Comes through an eligible ad campaign. Its format and availability depend on the market.

Sponsored label
UNPAID ROUTE Source link

Points to a relevant page the answer uses. You do not pay for the link, and inclusion is not guaranteed.

How do you get named in AI Mode without paying?

Do the search basics well. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. In my own study the named firms had more Google reviews, sat in the directories the AI tools read, and had websites that opened with what they do and where. None of that costs ad money.

That first point is from Google's guidance on AI features. The rest is from my Suffolk AI visibility study (18 September 2026), where I asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode for the best firms in six sectors. 962 of 1,253 Suffolk firms were never named by any of the three.

What the named firms had in common

  1. Google AI Mode reads Google Maps. In my study, AI Mode's answers lined up with Google Business Profiles. Fill yours in fully: categories, services, service area, hours, photos.
  2. Review volume, not just rating. Named firms had several times the Google reviews of the rest, in every sector. A 4.9 from 12 reviews loses to a 4.7 from 150.
  3. The directory the engine trusts. ChatGPT leaned on sector directories, such as a professional body's register. Find the one for your trade and get listed.
  4. A first sentence that says what and where. "Accountants in Bury St Edmunds" can be repeated by an AI tool. "Bespoke financial solutions" can't.
  5. One page per service, with prices if you can. In a small set of my own prompt tests, ChatGPT tended to cite small service pages that print their prices. It was a small test, so treat it as a lead, not a rule.

If you want the longer version, I've written up how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, and most of it applies to Google's AI answers as well.

Clear pages, credible reviews and the right listings give AI answers something to cite.

Should a small B2B firm pay for AI Mode ads?

Not yet, for most. In the UK the inside-the-answer placements aren't available, and where they are, you need broad match, AI Max or Performance Max campaigns, and Google gives advertisers little separate reporting on them. If you already run Google Ads profitably, ask whoever manages them to keep an eye on it. Otherwise, spend the time on the free route.

I'll be straight about my interest: I don't sell ads management, so I'm not the person to set those campaigns up. What I do is the work that gets a firm named without paying for it, and that work keeps paying back whether or not Google brings the ads here next month. If you're weighing up the cost of that, my guide to SEO prices in the UK covers what each budget buys.

How to check where you stand this week

Spend half an hour asking the AI tools about your own market. Ask Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your buyers ask, such as "best IT support company in Ipswich", and note who gets named. If it's three competitors and not you, the list above tells you where to start.

  • Ask five buyer questions in each tool, signed out, and write down every firm named.
  • Compare your Google review count with the named firms'.
  • Search for your sector's main directory and check you're in it, with the right details.
  • Read the first sentence of each service page out loud. Does it say what and where?
  • In Search Console, compare clicks for the two weeks before 15 October with the two weeks after.

If you'd rather not do it by hand, my free six-minute search check scores what buyers see when they look you up, including AI answers.

The practical summary

  • Google is testing ads inside AI Mode, and since October for people who connect Gmail and Photos too.
  • As of 25 October 2026, ads inside AI Overviews don't run in the UK, and the Gmail-linked test can't reach UK users.
  • Google's 15 October update puts more links in AI answers, placed higher. Click data hasn't been published.
  • You don't need to pay to be named. Google says no special optimisation is needed.
  • In my Suffolk study, named firms had more reviews, the right directory listings and plain opening lines.
  • Fix those first. Revisit paid AI placements once they reach the UK and you can measure them.

Fair questions

Does Google AI Mode have ads?

Yes. Google has been testing ads in AI Mode, including formats that sit inside a list of recommendations and are labelled Sponsored. In October 2026 it started testing ads for people who connect their Gmail and Photos through Personal Intelligence too.

Can UK businesses buy AI Overviews ads or AI Mode ads?

Not inside AI Overviews yet. Google's own help page lists 12 countries in English for ads inside AI Overviews, and the UK isn't one of them. Ads above and below AI Overviews run in every market. Google hasn't published a UK date for the newer AI Mode formats.

Do I need to pay to appear in Google AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The normal search basics apply: a page Google can index, that answers the question clearly, backed by a strong Google Business Profile and reviews.

Will ads in AI Mode use my Gmail?

Google's help page says ads won't be based directly on your Gmail inbox or Photos library. If you connect those apps, summaries, excerpts and inferences from them may be used to show you ads. Advertisers don't get access to your apps.

What should a small business do about AI Mode ads?

For most small UK B2B firms, nothing paid yet. Spend the time on the free route: get your Google Business Profile right, build review volume, get listed in the directories AI tools read, and make each service page open with what you do and where.
